New Delhi, Aug 6: The Government of India (GoI) has informed the Lok Sabha that 43,907 houses have been completed and delivered in Jammu & Kashmir under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U), while 42,584 houses have been sanctioned under PMAY-U 2.0.
Replying to a question raised by MP K. Gopinath, Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal, said PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0 are being implemented to provide all-weather pucca houses with basic civic amenities to eligible urban beneficiaries across the country.
The minister informed the House that in Jammu & Kashmir, 42,584 houses have been sanctioned under PMAY-U 2.0, while 3,398 houses have been grounded. A total of 43,907 houses have been completed and delivered, with the Centre approving Rs 734 crore in assistance, of which Rs 544 crore has been released.
For Ladakh, the reply stated that 987 houses have been sanctioned under PMAY-U 2.0, 151 houses grounded, and 1,071 houses completed and delivered. The Centre has approved Rs 34 crore in assistance, out of which Rs 27 crore has been released.
The minister said housing is a State subject and that PMAY-U adopts a demand-driven approach, with States and Union Territories assessing housing demand through Urban Local Bodies and submitting proposals to the Centre. He added that while the assessed urban housing demand in 2017-18 was around 112 lakh houses, more than 127 lakh houses have already been sanctioned under PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0 combined, exceeding the estimated demand.
