Ramban, Aug 7: A man was arrested after allegedly attempting to breach a police security check post and run over security personnel with his Scorpio SUV in Ramban district early Friday, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ramban Arun Gupta said.
Addressing a press conference, Gupta, said the black Scorpio (JK02AK-1743) reached the cut-off naka at Kunfer, Chanderkote, after entering from the JP Gate Link Road.
He said police personnel signalled the vehicle to stop for routine checking, but the driver ignored repeated directions, accelerated the vehicle and allegedly attempted to mow down naka personnel, forcing a policeman on duty to fire three warning shots from his service rifle.
“The driver deliberately ignored the naka and attempted to run over the naka personnel. Sensing an imminent threat to the lives of the security personnel, the guard on duty fired three warning shots,” the SSP said.
Following the incident, an FIR under Sections 109, 132 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was registered at Police Station Chanderkote. A joint search operation involving Ramban Police, the Special Operations Group (SOG), CRPF and the Army was immediately launched.
During the operation, one of the accused, identified as Altaf Mohammad, son of Barkat Ali, a resident of Krimchy, Mansar in Udhampur district, was apprehended. The Scorpio used in the incident was also recovered and seized, the officer said.
Gupta said the District Mobile Forensic Unit collected forensic evidence from the vehicle, while further investigation into the case is underway. (KNO)
