Park sear Sheikh Abdullah’s mausoleum turns into dumping ground

Srinagar, Aug 15: A park adjacent to the mausoleum of former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference leader Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah has turned into a dumping ground, with heaps of garbage scattered across the premises and marring the appearance of the Dal Lake-side public space.
The accumulation of plastic bags and other waste has taken away much of the park’s appeal, leaving the area visibly neglected despite its location along the banks of the Dal Lake and its proximity to the mausoleum of one of Jammu and Kashmir’s prominent political figures.
The condition of the park has also become a deterrent for visitors, with the scattered garbage and unkempt surroundings making people reluctant to spend time at the site.
The situation is particularly striking given the park’s location in one of Srinagar’s prominent areas, frequented by residents and visitors and forming part of the landscape around the Dal Lake.
Instead of serving as a clean public space, the park has effectively become a dumping ground, with waste spread across a considerable portion of the area.
The condition has raised questions over the maintenance of the park and the monitoring of waste disposal in the area. The continued accumulation of garbage also reflects poorly on the civic management of a public space located beside one of Srinagar’s most important landmarks.
Residents and visitors have called for immediate removal of the waste, regular sanitation and measures to prevent the area from being used for dumping in the future.
With the park lying in such a prominent location, continued official inaction risks further deterioration of the site and adds to the broader concerns over cleanliness and waste management around Dal Lake. [KNT]
