The decision to crack down on the use of gill nets in Kashmir’s waters is not merely an enforcement measure but a necessary step towards protecting the region’s fragile aquatic ecosystem and the livelihoods dependent on it. The Fisheries Department’s seizure of around 4,000 illegal gill nets since March highlights both the scale of the problem and the urgency of sustained action. Gill nets with small mesh sizes can indiscriminately trap juvenile and undersized fish, preventing them from reaching maturity and reproducing. If allowed to continue, such practices can steadily reduce fish stocks, undermine annual stocking efforts and ultimately hurt professional fishermen who depend on healthy water bodies for their income. Short-term gains from indiscriminate fishing cannot be allowed to compromise the long-term sustainability of the sector. However, enforcement alone will not solve the problem. The department’s efforts to increase awareness and distinguish permitted fishing practices from prohibited methods are equally important. Licensed fishermen should be encouraged to comply with regulations, while deliberate violations must attract penalties strong enough to deter repeat offences. Dal Lake presents a particular challenge. Its vast area and the reported shortage of personnel make round-the-clock surveillance difficult. The deployment of motorboats and rotational field teams is useful, but strengthening manpower and monitoring infrastructure is essential if illegal fishing is to be effectively controlled. The growing number of licensed fishermen also underlines the need for a balanced approach. Regulation should protect fish stocks without unnecessarily burdening those who depend legitimately on fishing. Kashmir’s fisheries are an ecological and economic resource. Protecting them requires consistent enforcement, adequate staffing, scientific stocking, responsible licensing and greater community participation. The objective should not simply be to seize illegal nets, but to ensure that Kashmir’s waters remain productive for future generations of fishermen and consumers.
