Baramulla, Aug 29: Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo on Saturday said the archaeological site at Zehanpora in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district is another significant treasure in J&K’s rich history.
Talking to the reporters on the sidelines of his visit to the archaeological site, Duloo said, “The ongoing excavation expected to reveal more about the region’s ancient civilisation.”
He said the second phase of excavation has commenced after obtaining the requisite permissions and “more revelations could be in offing.”
“Prima facie, it reveals that this is a 2,000-year-old Buddhist site. More full-fledged findings will come up as the excavation progresses,” he added.
He said the findings could provide valuable information about the civilisation that existed in the area around 2,000 years ago, including the materials and objects used during that period.
“After the excavation, it is certain that a major cultural treasure will be added to our history. In the coming days, this can become a tourism attraction as well,” the Chief Secretary said.
The excavation, which had started in October last year, was subsequently halted. The second phase has now resumed and is expected to continue for around three months.
Dulloo said scientific testing of the excavated material is also being carried out simultaneously to establish its age, nature and historical significance.
He added that while the present excavation phase is scheduled for three months, the broader process of studying and documenting the archaeological site could take up to five years.
Pertinently, the Zehanpora site was uncovered in 2025 following systematic excavation and survey work. The investigations revealed Buddhist stupas, monastic structures and remains of an urban-style settlement dating primarily to the Kushan period.
The discovery had also drawn national attention, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi describing the finding as a proud moment and highlighting its historical significance. (KNO)
