Man dies after kidney stone procedure at Anantnag hospital, family alleges negligence

Anantnag, Aug 29: A 36-year-old man from Qaimoh area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district died at a private hospital in Anantnag on Saturday, following which his family members alleged medical negligence and staged a protest outside the hospital.
The deceased has been identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Wani, son of Ghulam Nabi Wani, a resident of Qaimoh in Kulgam district. According to officials, Wani had been admitted to Mid City Private Hospital on KP Road at Naibasti, Anantnag, for a procedure related to a kidney stone.
Officials said that the patient underwent Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL), a minimally invasive procedure commonly performed for the removal of kidney stones. They said his condition was stable following the procedure, and he was being monitored at the hospital.
However, his condition deteriorated this morning, and he subsequently died at the hospital, officials said.
Following the death, the patient’s family members raised allegations of negligence against the treating doctors and hospital authorities. They staged a protest at the hospital, demanding that the circumstances surrounding the death be properly investigated.
Police also reached the hospital after the protest was reported and initiated proceedings to ascertain the sequence of events leading to the patient’s death.
The hospital, however, has denied that the death was linked to any immediate surgical complication.
Dr Zahoor Gilkar of Mid City Hospital said the patient had undergone PCNL and was stable after the procedure. He said the patient was doing well until this morning and had even been started on oral medication.
“He was fine till this morning, and even walked this morning, and after sometime he collapsed and died due to cardiac arrest,” Dr Gilkar said, adding that the exact cause can be known after postmortem and its report is awaited. (KNO)
