‘J&K’s peak power demand likely to surge by 450 MWs’

Srinagar, Sep 10: In coming three years, Jammu and Kashmir will likely require nearly additional 450 Megawatts (MWs) of power during the peak hours.
According to the official documents, authorities have projected that in the ongoing fiscal, Jammu and Kashmir will have a peak demand of 3813 MWs.
It also said that in the coming fiscal 2027-28, the region is likely to require additional 151 MWs of power during the peak time with a total demand projection of 3964 MWs.
Furthermore, the projections said that in the year 2028-29, Jammu and Kashmir may require additional 300 MWs of power during the peak hours in comparison to the projected demand of the ongoing fiscal.
The official figures also said that in the year 2029-30, Jammu and Kashmir will likely have a peak demand of 4262 MWs that amounts to 449 MWs of additional energy demand to the projection made for the year 2026-27.
Pertinently, as already reported by KNO, in the past 12 years, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a surge in power demand by more than 24 percent.
The Government of India (GoI) had said that from the fiscal 2014-15 to 2025-26, Jammu and Kashmir recorded a surge in demand of 3,971 MU.
The official figures further reveal that the annual energy demand in J&K rose from 16,214 Million Units (MU) in 2014-15 to 20,185 MU in 2025-26.
It also said that the peak power demand at 20,374 MU was recorded in 2024-25.
The GoI had also said that the actual power supply position of the region jumped from 13,119 MU in 2014-15 to 20,166 MU in 2025-26 that amounts to a massive 53.7% increase in available energy. (KNO)
