Dy CM slams BJP over House disruption

Srinagar, Sep 21: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Monday termed the disruption of Legislative Assembly proceedings by BJP members as “mere drama”, saying the opposition should question the government and raise people’s issues instead of creating a ruckus.
Reacting to the disruption on the opening day of the Assembly session, Choudhary said that the limited time available should have been utilised to address public concerns.
“The House should have been used for people’s expectations. No doubt the time was less; however, it should have been utilised for the people,” he said.
Choudhary said it was the opposition’s responsibility to hold the government accountable and highlight issues concerning the people, but maintained that this should be done through debate and discussion.
“They don’t want to run the House but only to be in headlines and reels. This drama won’t be allowed to continue,” the Deputy Chief Minister said.
The House proceedings were disrupted amid BJP protests over power tariff hikes and demands for the regularisation of daily wagers. National Conference and Congress members also raised slogans seeking the restoration of statehood.
Choudhary further alleged that the BJP deliberately disrupted proceedings over the report related to the Jal Jeevan Mission.
“BJP knew the Jal Jeevan Mission report was to be submitted. The irregularities pertain to their tenure and were committed by them,” he said.
He alleged that the BJP was attempting to divert attention from its record during its tenure in Jammu and Kashmir.
“If they want a CBI inquiry, they should raise the matter before the government and the Assembly instead of creating a hue and cry,” Choudhary said.
He reiterated that the Assembly should be used to debate public issues and seek answers from the government rather than disrupt proceedings. (KNO)
