Srinagar, Oct 1: BCCI president Mithun Manhas on Thursday assured full support for the development of cricket infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, saying improved facilities are essential for attracting more high-profile domestic and international matches to the Union Territory.
Speaking to reporters after the opening day of the Irani Cup clash between Jammu and Kashmir and Rest of India at the Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium, Manhas, said the return of the prestigious fixture to Srinagar after nearly four decades was a significant moment for cricket in the Valley.
“I would like more matches to take place here. A match of this stature is being held here after four decades, which is a matter of great happiness,” he said.
Emphasising the need for better infrastructure, Manhas said the newly formed JKCA administration should prioritise stadium development.
“It is important to strengthen basic infrastructure. I hope the new body that has been formed recently will focus on building a stadium here,” he said, assuring the association of the BCCI’s full support.
Manhas said cricket infrastructure development should not remain limited to Srinagar and Jammu but must extend to other parts of the Union Territory, including Rajouri and Poonch.
“It is the responsibility of the state association to ensure stadiums and facilities are developed across its jurisdiction,” he said.
Backing the current JKCA administration, Manhas said the association had been working for the welfare of players and expressed confidence that it would continue contributing to the growth of cricket in the region.
“We already had talent; we just needed to give it direction,” he said, describing J&K’s progress in domestic cricket, including its Ranji Trophy performances, as encouraging.
He also acknowledged the support extended by former BCCI secretary Jay Shah towards cricket development in Jammu and Kashmir.
Highlighting the rise of J&K pacer Auqib Nabi, Manhas said the cricketer’s journey should inspire aspiring players across the region.
“Auqib Nabi’s selection proves that talent can emerge from anywhere. He is from Baramulla, and his story is truly inspiring,” he said. (KNO)
