Srinagar, Oct 2: National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah on Friday said the primary objective of the Assembly is to foster debate, expose the government’s shortcomings and ensure accountability, while asserting that targeting the Chief Minister is an inherent part of the legislative process.
Speaking to reporters after Friday prayers here, Dr Farooq Abdullah said questioning the Chief Minister is a natural component of democratic functioning and that whoever occupies the chair must be prepared to face such scrutiny.
“The purpose of the Assembly session is to hold discussions, bring the government’s errors to light, and have the government respond to them. Targeting the Chief Minister is part of this process. Whoever holds this office has to face these things,” he said.
His remarks come amid heightened political activity in the Union Territory, with a fresh resolution for the restoration of statehood passed in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on September 28.
The restoration of statehood has remained a core agenda of the National Conference since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. The ruling party in the Union Territory has recently intensified its push for the demand, taking it to the national capital.
Dr Farooq Abdullah, a former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, underscored that the Assembly serves as a platform for democratic accountability, where the opposition’s role in highlighting governance lapses is both legitimate and necessary, and said the government must respond to the issues raised on the floor of the House.
