Sopore, Oct 10: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition in north Kashmir’s Sopore area.
An official said that recoveries include two assault rifles, four pistols, 11 hand grenades and three improvised explosive devices (IEDs). “It’s a huge blow to terror networks in Sopore,” the official added.
While sharing the details, the officer said, “Sopore Police on a tip-off launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in the Mukaam Cherhar forest falling under the jurisdiction of Police Station Bomai this morning.”
He said, “During the search, a blue barrel and a bag were found concealed beneath a large boulder. The Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) was subsequently called to the spot for examination and safe handling of the suspected explosive material.”
“The recovered cache included an AK-47 and an AK-76 assault rifle, along with seven magazines and ammunition. Four pistols, four magazines and ammunition were also seized. The recovery further included a Multi Grenade Launcher (MGL) with five rounds, 11 hand grenades, three IEDs fitted with remote controls, eight detonators and two timers. Other material, including a Y-SMS set, prima cords, wires, battery cells, IED-related components and miscellaneous accessories, were also recovered,” the official added.
He said the material has been taken into possession in accordance with legal procedures and necessary safety precautions. “In this connection, FIR No. 66/2026 has been registered at Police Station Bomai under Sections 13, 18, 20 and 23 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), Sections 7/25 of the Arms Act and Section 5 of the Explosive Substances Act,” the official said, adding, “Further investigation is underway to establish the source of the recovered material, and identify those involved in concealing the cache and ascertain possible terrorist linkages.”
“Recovery of arms and ammunition is a significant achievement in the ongoing counter-terrorism efforts in the area,” the official added. (KNO)
