Srinagar, Oct 15: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday said that the schedule for the Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls in Jammu & Kashmir will be announced in due course of time, keeping in view the region’s weather conditions.
While unveiling the SSR schedule for 17 states, the poll‑body said that a similar exercise for Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh will be notified separately.
“Also, for the three States/UTs namely Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, where the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) has not been started so far, the schedule for roll revision will be announced in due course of time, keeping in view their weather conditions,” the ECI said.
The Special Summary Revision is the Election Commission’s annual exercise to update the electoral rolls. There has been no revision of electoral rolls in Jammu & Kashmir since the 2024 Assembly elections. Officials said the revision is necessary for holding municipal polls. While the State Election Commission carries out the revision of rolls for Panchayat elections on its own, it depends on the ECI’s exercise for updated rolls in municipal areas.
The five‑year term of municipalities in Jammu & Kashmir ended between October and November 2023, while the term of Panchayats concluded on January 9, 2024. (KNO)
