Pulwama, Oct 19: A 70-year-old woman was allegedly murdered inside her home in Parigam village of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district early Monday, with an unidentified assailant suspected of entering the house and slitting her throat while her son was away at a nearby mosque for Fajr prayers.
The deceased has been identified as Jani Begum, a resident of Parigam. Officials said the incident occurred at around 5 am, when her son had gone to the mosque to offer morning prayers.
According to preliminary accounts, an unidentified person allegedly entered the house during the son’s absence and attacked the elderly woman with a sharp-edged weapon, slitting her throat. She reportedly died at the scene.
The incident came to light after the woman was found dead inside the residence. Police reached the spot after receiving information and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Officials said the investigation is aimed at establishing the sequence of events, identifying the person or persons involved and determining the motive behind the killing. The motive had not been established at the time of filing this report.
The circumstances of the alleged entry into the house and the attack remain under investigation. No arrest or official identification of a suspect was reported in the accounts available on Monday.
The killing has raised serious concerns in the locality, given that the victim was an elderly woman attacked inside her own home. Investigators are expected to examine the available evidence and question relevant persons as they work to establish what happened.
Police have taken cognizance of the incident and said the investigation is underway. [KNT]
