Kashmir’s decision to make the marathon an annual flagship event marks an important step towards diversifying tourism beyond conventional sightseeing. The third edition of the Kashmir Marathon, scheduled for October 25, is expected to attract more than 2,000 athletes, including 73 foreign runners. The event offers an opportunity to showcase the Valley’s scenic beauty, hospitality and potential as a destination for international sporting activities. The recent statement by the authorities that the marathon will become a regular feature on the tourism calendar is welcome. Its inclusion in the calendar of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) can help build continuity, improve visibility and establish the event among recognised international running competitions. However, sustaining its reputation will require consistent organisation, professional management and growing participation year after year. The proposed introduction of 5K and 10K races during the spring season is another positive initiative. With tulips and other blossoms attracting visitors, shorter races could combine fitness with tourism while encouraging families, young people and amateur runners to participate. A separate prize category for local athletes is equally important. It can provide Kashmiri runners greater recognition, motivate emerging talent and promote a culture of fitness among the youth. Sports tourism also offers economic benefits beyond hotel bookings. Athletes frequently travel with family members, stay for several days and spend on transport, food, accommodation and local attractions. Golf tournaments, skiing, snowboarding and other adventure activities can extend visitors’ stays and generate income for businesses and service providers, particularly during the winter season. Yet, ambition must be matched by investment in infrastructure, reliable services, safety and accessibility. International participation remains sensitive to travel advisories and perceptions of security. Transparent arrangements, effective coordination among departments and quality hospitality will be essential to build confidence. The Kashmir Marathon should not remain a one-day spectacle. If supported by a year-round sporting calendar, local talent development and sustained international promotion, it can become a lasting tourism brand, creating employment and strengthening Kashmir’s global identity.
