600 MW power deficit looms over J&K, Ladakh

Srinagar, Oct 28: Two House Committees of the Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly will get new chairpersons following the induction of their heads as ministers in the Omar Abdullah-led government.
Senior National Conference leaders Ali Muhammad Sagar and Mir Saifullah, who were heading the Committee on Government Assurances and the Committee on Public Undertakings respectively, have ceased to be members of the committees after being inducted into the Council of Ministers.
“Both these committees will get new chairpersons,” an official in the Legislative Assembly Secretariat said.
Under the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, a member ceases to be a member of a committee upon his or her appointment as a minister.
Sagar and Saifullah, who were nominated as chairpersons of the two committees on May 12 for the financial year 2026-27, were sworn in as ministers on Tuesday.
Altaf Ahmad Wani (alias Kaloo) and Shamima Firdous, who were members of the crucial Public Accounts Committee (PAC), have also ceased to be members of the committee.
The appointment of chairpersons of House Committees in May this year had sparked a massive controversy, with the principal opposition party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing the Speaker of bias in appointing heads of the committees. (KNO)
