Srinagar, Oct 31: National Conference (NC) leader and Minister Javid Ahmed Dar on Saturday dismissed reports of internal rifts within the party, saying differences of opinion are natural in a democratic organisation, but the entire party leadership and legislators remained united.
Speaking to reporters in Jammu, Dar, said recent meetings of NC legislators had been wrongly portrayed as secret gatherings aimed at splitting the party.
“Before the cabinet expansion, some colleagues visited my residence for tea and discussions on party matters. However, reports later emerged claiming that a secret meeting was taking place. Similarly, a gathering at Nasir Sahib’s residence was portrayed as an attempt to break the party. There is absolutely no truth in these claims,” he said.
The minister said he had personally spoken to several MLAs and senior party colleagues, adding that no such move was underway.
“National Conference is a strong political organisation. All legislators and the entire leadership stand firmly with the party. Differences of opinion can exist in a large democratic party, but such matters are discussed with the leadership and resolved through consensus,” he said.
Referring to MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi’s announcement regarding his possible departure from the party on November 3, Dar said the Member Parliament appeared to have already made up his mind.
“From day one, he has been criticising the National Conference leadership. If he wanted reconciliation, he could have allowed space for dialogue. His repeated criticism indicates that he has decided to leave,” Dar said.
However, he maintained that several party colleagues remained in contact with Ruhullah and efforts were continuing to persuade him.
“The party has made every possible effort. Many of our colleagues are still in touch with him, but when someone has already made up his mind, it becomes difficult to change that decision,” he added.
The minister also clarified that a recent gathering at Qaiser Sahib’s residence was merely a dinner meeting during which legislators discussed ways to strengthen the party.
On the cabinet expansion, Dar expressed optimism that the inclusion of more ministers would improve accessibility, coordination and public outreach.
“Earlier, there were five members, but now the number has increased to nine. This will help improve accessibility and enable us to serve people more effectively,” he said. (KNO)
