Jammu, Nov 4: Minister for Tribal Affairs, Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs and Transport, Javed Ahmed Rana, Wednesday chaired a high-level review meeting of the Transport Department to assess its functioning, operational efficiency and future development plans.
The meeting focused on improving public service delivery, strengthening transport infrastructure and enhancing road safety across Jammu and Kashmir.
The Minister reviewed the functioning of the Motor Vehicles Department, stressing the need for a robust mechanism to ensure prompt and hassle-free delivery of driving licences. He directed for establishment of Driving Training Centres (DTCs) in far-flung areas to facilitate access to quality driving training. He also called for intensified road checking and strict action against traffic violators, emphasising that effective enforcement is essential for improving road safety and ensuring compliance with traffic regulations.
Stressing the importance of an efficient, safe and reliable transport system for economic growth and public welfare, Rana called for transforming the department into a modern, technology-driven and citizen-centric institution capable of meeting the growing mobility needs of the people.
“Our vision is to build a transport ecosystem that is efficient, transparent, digitally empowered and environmentally sustainable. Every reform must translate into better public service delivery and make transportation safer, more accessible and commuter-friendly,” the Minister said.
Reviewing online services, Rana directed the officers to ensure prompt, efficient and hassle-free access to all transport-related services through digital platforms. He stressed the need to further streamline service delivery mechanisms and ensure timely dispatch of Driving Licence Cards through simplified procedures. He reiterated the government’s commitment to make transport services accessible, transparent and responsive to public needs.
Regarding road safety, the Minister called for extensive awareness drives and educational campaigns targeting all categories of road users. He also stressed periodic medical examinations of drivers to minimise accident risks. He directed the officers to strengthen field-level enforcement through advanced monitoring tools and maintain strict vigilance against traffic violations. He emphasised regular verification of speed governors and timely renewal of registration of aged vehicles in accordance with prescribed environmental and mechanical fitness standards.
Calling for a coordinated and forward-looking approach, Rana urged the officers to pursue technology-driven reforms, modern transport infrastructure and sustainable mobility solutions across the Union Territory. He asked them to work closely with all stakeholders and adopt a proactive approach towards public concerns to ensure a safe, reliable and commuter-friendly transport system.
During the meeting, the Minister was apprised that over 27.24 lakh vehicles have been registered across Jammu and Kashmir, while the department issued 3.24 lakh learner licences and over 96,000 new driving licences during 2026. The department has realised revenue of Rs 660.32 crore up to October 2026 during the current financial year.
