Srinagar, Nov 5: The Election Commission of India on Thursday said the Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls in Jammu & Kashmir will be announced in due course of time.
The Commission said the schedule for roll revision in J&K, Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh will be announced later, keeping in view their weather conditions.
“Also, for the 3 States/UTs namely Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, where SIR has not been started so far, schedule for roll revision will be announced in due course of time keeping in view their weather conditions,” the ECI said.
The announcement brings clarity on why Jammu & Kashmir has been left out of the ongoing nationwide revision exercise. With winter setting in and large parts of J&K, particularly the higher reaches, becoming inaccessible due to snowfall, the Commission has opted to defer the exercise.
The last revision of electoral rolls in Jammu & Kashmir was carried out in 2024. Since then, no such revision activity has been undertaken in the UT.
The SSR is particularly important in the context of Jammu and Kashmir. It would provide updated electoral rolls for the municipal elections, which have been delayed inordinately.
Urban local body elections in J&K have been pending, leaving municipalities and municipal councils without elected representatives. An updated voter list is a prerequisite for holding these elections. (KNO)
