As the world observed Children’s Day, several events were organized by the government departments and private institutions here to highlight the rights of the children. The government even highlighted the initiatives taken for the wellbeing of the children. However, one fails to understand why the people remained tightlipped over the child labour on the occasion when the day was specially being celebrated for the children. The child labour is turning a normal affair now as nobody even the government is not paying heed over it. In Srinagar’s main market, the children could be seen working as salesmen, street vendors and at other places, which is against the law. Nonetheless, there has been not even a single incident when the concerned authorities have taken action against it to ensure that no children are forced or willingly work. There is a need to gear up and ensure that strict measures are taken in this regard and ensure that all the underage are not allowed to work. Besides, the government on this occasion should take further measures with regard to the children so that those who are out to earn their livelihood because of their family issues should get special attention and are assisted so that they can get education at par with the other children within the society irrespective of the age, caste and creed. The children are our future and we need to save them and put them on the right track to ensure the nation will be in safe hands.
