The roads in the Valley especially in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, continue to remain congested despite the fact that the number of vehicles on the roads including private as well as the public have increased since the past one decade. The flow of vehicles is increasing with each passing day, adding to the figure of registered vehicles on the roads. However, the concerned departments have failed to execute the plans to widen the roads to accommodate the rush of the increasing number of vehicles. With no steps to widen the roads, the rush of vehicles is leading to the frequent traffic congestion on the roads, especially during peak hours, leaving the commuters to lurch at large. The men in blue too are being pushed to the wall to streamline the traffic. The roads especially in Old City areas too need widening process as the congested roads are giving tough times to the commuters where hardly some traffic cops are being deployed to ensure smooth passage of the vehicular movement. The government at this juncture needs to take all the appropriate measures to put an end to the sufferings of the commuters, who day in and day out face tremendous hardships while passing through these vital roads in Old city areas. The Roads and Building department as per the reports has already formed a plan in this regard, but unfortunately there has been no positive step on the ground. Therefore, the government must consider executing the plans at an earliest so that the people here could heave a sigh of relief and the increasing number of vehicles could be easily accommodated.
