Srinagar, Apr 29: The Government of India has advised the administration of Jammu & Kashmir against dropping the car parking projects approved for the Union Territory under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme.
Documents in possession reveal that secretary Housing and Urban Affairs Durga Shanker Mishra suggested to J&K that it shall not abandon these projects at this stage as UTs are getting 100% central assistance for AMRUT projects.
The Centre communicated its views to J&K during the 26th meeting of the apex committee set-up for monitoring implementation of the scheme. The meeting was held on December 28, 2020.
In the meeting, the UT administration pushed for replacing two car parking projects sanctioned under the scheme. “Representative of UT of Jammu & Kashmir submitted before the committee that two projects of construction of car parking at Peerkhoo, Jammu and Poloview, Srinagar at the total cost of Rs 25.10 crore have been non-starter and are to be replaced,” reads minutes of the meeting.
In 2015, the Government of India launched the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) with the aim of providing basic civic amenities like water supply, sewerage, urban transport, parks as to improve the quality of life for all especially the poor and the disadvantaged. The focus of the Mission is on infrastructure creation that has a direct link to provision of better services to the citizens.
