Jammu and Kashmir is blessed with the natural resources and one among the resources is water bodies here, which has been attracting the people from all across the globe. However, the wetlands that have been playing a pivotal role are vanishing with each passing day, which indicates that no lessons have been learnt from the precious deluge that hit Kashmir in the year 2014 and led to the huge losses to the properties of the people. Kashmir has a chain of wetlands supporting vast biodiversity most of which circumvent Srinagar and Budgam with huge potential of tourism and employment generation. Nonetheless, the wetlands are shrinking as the people and those at the helm of affairs have never bothered to ensure that the much-needed wetlands are preserved. The government has been making statements with regard to the preservation of the wetlands, but on the ground, the situation is worsening with each passing day, making the properties vulnerable. The land filling on wetlands has been reportedly witnessed for time to time while several constructions have been raised on the wetlands, resulting in decline in the wetlands. The concerned agencies have to play their role in ensuring that no more wetlands are filled with soil. The government should also consider taking stringent actions against the wetland grabbers and those allowing the construction on these wetlands should also be taken to the task so that the natural resources in Jammu and Kashmir are not fiddled with.
