As the skyrocketing prices has already pushed the people in the Valley to the wall, the attempts are being made to enhance the rates of mutton in Srinagar and elsewhere ahead of the Muslim festival, Eid-ul-Fitr, which is set to leave the people belonging to downtrodden section of the society to lurch at large. As the Eid-ul-Fitr is approaching, the mutton dealers and butchers have once again staged a protest, demanding an increase in the mutton rates, which were increased just a few months back. However, the mutton dealers here are claiming that these rates are not helping them to earn out of the business, thus want the present rates to be enhanced at earliest given the rise in petrol and other products. One fails to understand why these mutton dealers usually come up with such demands ahead of the Muslim festival, Eid. It seems that the protests are being deliberately staged at a time when the festival is approaching. But, there is a need to understand that the demands of these mutton dealers and butchers if met would leave thousands of families to lurch at large ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr as they won’t be able to buy the mutton for their families given the skyrocketing price. The present rates are already unaffordable for them and any further enhancement would push them to the wall. Therefore, the government at this juncture must swing into action and ensure that the vested interests are not allowed to push the downtrodden section of the society to the wall so that the poor people could heave a sigh of relief.
