Sopore, Mar 6: Scores of Contingent Paid Workers (CPW) – working as sweepers at the Department of Education Monday staged a protest here to press for holding departmental promotions.
Eyewitnesses said that scores of women – Contingent Paid Workers (CPW’s) of various government based schools gathered at Iqbal market area of the town and staged a peaceful protest against the school education department.
The protestors, while shouting slogans, blocked the road, thus halting the traffic movement, however, timely intervention of police restored the traffic, they said.
The protesters said that they have been working for the last 20 years at just Rs 50 or 100 and the government is not paying any attention towards them. “Holding departmental promotions has been their long-pending demand”, they said.
“Authorities are only constituting committees in this regard. Despite creating new posts, they are not serious about the matter”, said Haleem, a protestor. However, the protestors also appealed to authorities to issue orders for their wages as per Minimum Wages Act.
“If our demands are not met at the earliest, we would come to the streets with our families and hold an indefinite hunger strike until our demands are met”, the protestors added.
Meanwhile, Zonal Educational Officer (ZEO) Sopore, said that they are looking into it and the process is going on.
