50 drug peddlers arrested, 38 cases registered in Ganderbal in 2022: SSP Ganderbal

Ganderbal, Mar 27: Ganderbal Police arrested 50 drug peddlers and registered 38 cases last year in the district.
SSP Ganderbal Nikhil Borkar while talking to media persons on Monday said that 38 FIRs have been registered against drug peddlers while 50 drug peddlers were arrested in 2022.
He said drug peddling is a “big challenge” and police are taking stern action against those involved in the menace. He also lauded the locals for their cooperation with law enforcing agencies in their drive against drug peddling.
Earlier, a seminar-cum-awareness programme against drug addiction was organised at Townhall Ganderbal which was chaired by SSP Ganderbal along with DySP Headquarters Ganderbal Gh Hassan; and attended by teachers, respectable citizens, media fraternity, students of Degree College Ganderbal and various other schools of the district.
While speaking on the occasion, SSP Ganderbal said that people’s cooperation is pivotal in eradicating the menace of drugs from society. He asked the students that the police are ready to help them in promoting sports and games. He stressed upon the participants to share all information related to drugs and their peddling in the area with the concerned police units so that the district police can act swiftly.
Borkar appealed to the participants to extend their help in identifying drug addicts in their localities so that they can be counselled in better ways with the help of Drug De-addiction Centres.
Dy.SP Hqrs Ganderbal highlighted the role of school management in identifying such cases and their role in the treatment process thereof. Psychiatrist Dr Umar Jan spoke on the psychological and social aspects of drug addiction. He talked about the socio-economic, physiological and psychological causes and also the preventive measures of drug addiction.
The participants were encouraged to adopt positive approaches and to encourage others to do the same in eliminating this menace from society.
Moreover, various dignitaries, social activists, artists and students of different schools of the district shed light on the “burning issue” of drug addiction and its negative effects.
At the end of the seminar, SSP Ganderbal distributed mementos among the guests for their “utmost contribution” towards the welfare of society. Trophies were also distributed among the students who spoke on the occasion.
