Srinagar, Apr 19: Garbage Collection Point outside a private school at Omar Colony Lal Bazar area in Srinagar has been irking people especially commuters as it has become a continuous source of traffic jams.
Notably, Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation Aamir Athar Khan issued an order recently directing all the Ward Officers to remove all the dust bins from their wards. The Commissioner made it clear that there will be no presence of any Garbage Collection Point in Srinagar city.
However, despite the order, several Garbage Collection Points are still present in Srinagar city. Amid incessant rain on Wednesday, the garbage lifting trucks from SMC were seen in Lal Bazar lifting garbage, thus creating a massive traffic jam.
“It’s routine for SMC to lift garbage during school time in Lal Bazar. SMC has become more a nuisance than an asset,” a commuter Showkat Ahmed said.
“Out of 30 feet road, 10 feet are occupied by garbage. SMC sanitation workers along with vehicles emerge on daily basis at 9 in the morning, block the road as a result not only school buses, but vehicles ferrying employees too get stuck,” a local resident said.
Parents of school kids had repeatedly requested to stop the morning-time lifting of solid waste, but the unhealthy practice continues leading to chaos and massive traffic jam.
Locals hope the recent order will be implemented in letter and spirit and Srinagar will be made free from garbage bins and collection points.
An official from SMC said that after the Eid-ul-Fitr, it will be ensured all garbage collection points cease to exist. “We are going to adopt waste collection and its disposal on scientific lines after Eid. Currently, you won’t find any garbage bin in any ward of the Srinagar and after Eid, there will be no collection points as well,” he added. [KNT]
