Ganderbal, Jul 25: Nestled in the breathtaking landscapes of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district lies an ancient Shiv Temple. This holy site is located in Manasbal, on the front side of the Wullar Manasbal Development Authority (WMDA) office.
Abdul Rasheed, a local caretaker employed as a casual laborer at the WMDA, said that the temple had submerged in the tranquil waters of the pond but today, it stands revitalized, making it a new pilgrimage attraction.
“The temple had been partially submerged, with half of its magnificent structure gracefully resting under the water’s surface; however, when the Wular Manasbal Development Authority was formed, they recognized the temple’s significance and embarked on an ambitious renovation project, breathing a new life into the edifice,” he said.
The Shiv Temple is a remarkable example of Kashmir’s architectural brilliance, constructed using enchanting grey stones.
Over the years, it has witnessed the passage of time, preserving the essence of centuries gone by. The temple is believed to be built during the 9th century CE by King Avantivarman, the founder of the Utpala dynasty.
“Legends say that it once stood tall as a submerged stone temple, embracing the mystique of time,” said Ghulam Rasool, another casual laborer working in the area.
Adding to the allure of the site, the pond’s water is said to be remarkably sweet and healthful. Visitors are drawn not only to the temple’s ancient charm but also to partake in the purity of the water, a rarity in today’s bustling world.
“Tourists from all walks of life who visit Manasbal find themselves deeply moved by the beautiful display of Hindu-Muslim brotherhood exhibited by this temple,” Rasool said. “It stands as a powerful symbol of unity, transcending religious boundaries and fostering harmony among diverse communities.”
To protect this treasured site and preserve its pristine waters, the Manasbal Development Authority has erected a protective fence so that no pollution taints the purity of the freshwater. The temple’s maintenance and care are entrusted to the capable hands of the authority, ensuring that its sacred aura remains undisturbed for generations to come.
CEO Wular Manasbal Development Authority, Ghulam Mohammad Bhat told KNO that they ensure the temple’s cleanliness and upkeep so that the visitors can bask in its divine presence without any hindrance.
As time continues to weave its tapestry, the Shiv Temple in Manasbal stands strong as a testament to the past, beckoning pilgrims and visitors alike to embrace its spiritual aura and marvel at the rich history it cradles within its ancient walls.
