Ganderbal, Dec 1: The ancient mosque situated in Malshahi Bagh in Ganderbal tracing its origin to Mughal rule is in ruins in absence of its upkeep by Central Waqf Board.
The Board which currently administers the historic mosque along with 360 kanals of orchard land was constructed by Dara Shikoh in the 17th century as a tribute to his mentor Mullah Akhoon Shah.
Despite the Central Waqf Board reaping substantial revenue from the surrounding gardens and shrines, no efforts or funds have been allocated towards the restoration or upkeep of this culturally significant mosque.
Locals said the centuries-old mosque can be transformed into a potential tourist destination.
During the Mughal era, the place served as a pivotal site for prayers and congregational gatherings.
Locals said the revenue extracted from the orchards go into the kitty of Waqf but the governments have done little for its preservation.
Furthermore, it’s been disclosed that various international organizations had expressed interest in restoring the mosque to its former glory in the past, demonstrating a willingness to oversee its maintenance and preservation.
A concerned officer from Waqf Board said that he inspected the site with the Archaeological department and they can handover the NOC to the department so they can go ahead with the project.
An official from the Archaeological Department said that the authorities are not providing them NOC and it is the reason the work is on hold.
“Once we receive the NOC, we will start the work,” he said.
He added that the DPR with a budget of Rs 3 crore and project assignment is ready.
