Srinagar, Feb 26: In a significant political development, Jammu & Kashmir Peoples Conference on Monday announced that its president Sajad Gani Lone would contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls from Baramulla- Kupwara parliamentary segment.
In a post on X, formerly twitter, Peoples Conference general secretary Imran Reza Ansari said that the leadership and the rank and file of the party have overwhelmingly endorsed the candidature of the party president Sajad Gani Lone.
“It is with great pleasure that I formally announce that Mr Sajad Lone has acceded to the demand of the party. He will be the candidate of the party from Baramulla Parliamentary seat,” he said.
Lone, who is a strong contender for the seat, would be locked in a direct contest with National Conference, as other parties have limited influence in the segment.
Lone, who took over as PC president after assassination of his father Abdul Gani Lone in 2002, would be banking on the party’s traditional votebank and influence of leaders who have joined the party over the past few years.
PC’s general secretary Imran Reza Ansari has also influence in 4-5 assembly segments of the Lok Sabha seat.
Besides, Lone is also expected to get votes from both Pahari and Gujjar communities given his party’s strong ties with them since PC’s formation in 1978.
