In the mutton consuming Valley, the people usually buy mutton for the Muslim festival, Eid every year to celebrate the occasion with happiness and zeal, but since the government has stopped to look after the mutton rates in Jammu & Kashmir, the dealers, especially the butchers have been let loose to fix the rates as per their will. It is for the first time that the government will not be looking into the rates of the mutton after a circular was issued, asking the concerned department to stop issuing rate lists and taking action against the mutton dealers. The order was issued just a few months after the government had launched a drive to take action against the mutton dealers and butchers for selling the mutton at exorbitant rates. However, since the rates have been issued by the mutton dealers on their own, the common people are feeling alienated as nobody is keen to bring respite to them in terms of witnessing fixed rates on the mutton. One fails to understand who is going to look into the issue now as ahead of Eid, the rates have fluctuated, thereby leaving the common masses to lurch at large. The time has come when the government should reconsider its decision and should once again enforce the rates on mutton so that the poor people are not pushed to the wall. Ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, the people need to get some respite and thus the government should come up with strict action once again so that the people could heave a sigh of relief.
