Srinagar, Jul 24: In the month of Muharram, the markets across Kashmir are witnessing a significant surge in the demand for Gulab Arq or Arq-e-Gulab, a traditional perfume deeply rooted in the region’s cultural heritage.
This fragrant essence, known for its captivating rose aroma, holds a special place in the hearts of Kashmiris, especially during this sacred month.
Gulab Arq, derived from the Persian word for rose water, is not just a perfume but a symbol of tradition and spirituality in Kashmir.
Its significance heightens during Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, marked by solemn mourning and remembrance of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his companions at the Battle of Karbala.
Local sellers, who have been preserving the art of making Gulab Arq or the Arq-e-Gulab for generations, report a significant increase in demand as Muharram progresses.
“We see a notable rise in sales during Muharram,” said a perfume seller in Srinagar’s downtown market.
He added that people use Gulab Arq to anoint themselves, spray in masjids, and even spray it during processions and gatherings. It adds a sense of purity and sanctity to the environment.
One of the local residents, Aazan, shared that it is a tradition to spray Gulab Arq in mosques and on mourners during Muharram processions. “The fragrance brings a sense of peace and reflection. It’s a reminder of our cultural and religious roots,” he added. Another local, Zahid, said, “Whenever I smell Gulab Arq, it brings back memories of my childhood.”
