Srinagar Dec 24: Houseboat owners in Dal Lake are struggling to run their business due to the electricity crisis.
Frequent and prolonged power outages have left tourists disgruntled, forcing many to reconsider their travel plans to the Valley.
The picturesque Dal and Nigeen Lakes, home to hundreds of houseboats, are now grappling with a sharp decline in tourist satisfaction due to erratic power supply.
Houseboat owners, who depend on electricity to ensure basic amenities like heating, lighting, and water supply, are finding it increasingly difficult to maintain standards.
“Tourists come here expecting comfort and a unique experience, but the constant power cuts disrupt their stay. Many guests leave dissatisfied, and some even cancel their bookings,” said Ghulam Rasool, a houseboat owner in Dal Lake.
For tourists visiting during the cold winter months, heating is essential. Without reliable electricity, houseboat owners are forced to rely on costly and environmentally damaging diesel generators. “Using generators adds to our expenses and creates noise and pollution, which goes against the serene environment we promise to our guests,” said Bilal Ahmed, another houseboat owner.
Tourists, too, have voiced their concerns. “We were excited to experience the famous houseboat stay, but the lack of electricity made it uncomfortable, especially at night. It’s disappointing,” said Anita Verma, a tourist from Mumbai.
The decline in tourist satisfaction poses a serious threat to the livelihoods of thousands of families dependent on tourism, including houseboat operators, shikara owners, and local craftsmen.
The Jammu and Kashmir administration has acknowledged the issue, promising measures to stabilize power supply. However, stakeholders in the tourism sector are demanding immediate and sustained solutions.
“We urge the government to prioritize uninterrupted electricity, especially during peak tourist seasons. Tourism is the backbone of Kashmir’s economy, and neglecting this issue could have long-term consequences,” said Bilal.
