Amira Kadal pedestrian footbridge 40 per cent complete: Officials

Srinagar, Feb 4: The construction of the much-anticipated Amira Kadal pedestrian footbridge in the heart of Srinagar’s bustling Lal Chowk is approximately 40% complete and is expected to open to the public soon, officials from Srinagar Smart City Limited (SSCL) said on Tuesday.
According to SSCL officials, the bridge’s key structural components, including its pillars and girders, have been successfully installed. The next major phase involves developing a plaza with seating arrangements on the opposite side of the road, which is currently delayed due to pending shop relocations.
“The girder placement is complete, and overall, about 40% of the work has been done,” an SSCL official said. “We are now awaiting the relocation of shops on the other side to proceed with constructing the plaza, which will complement the bridge’s functionality.”
The project, initiated with an estimated cost of Rs 7.17 crore, was originally slated for completion by May 2024. However, delays related to shop shifting have slowed progress. Officials remain optimistic that, once the relocation is complete, construction will gain momentum, especially during the upcoming summer season.
“The shop relocation is being coordinated with the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC),” the official added. “Joint meetings with the affected shopkeepers have been held, and we are working on providing them with alternative spaces. We’re hopeful that the resettlement process will be finalized soon so that the project can proceed without further delays.”
The Amira Kadal pedestrian bridge is a key component of the broader Srinagar Smart City project, aimed at enhancing urban connectivity, easing pedestrian movement, and improving the overall aesthetic of the city’s core commercial areas.
While initial deadlines have been extended, officials are confident that the project will regain full momentum once the logistical hurdles are cleared. “Our goal is to create not just a bridge but a vibrant public space that enhances the urban experience in Srinagar,” the official said.
