Jammu, Jun 1: The Animal Husbandry Department (AHD) Jammu Sunday celebrated World Milk Day 2025, underscoring the vital role of the Dairy Sector in supporting nutritional needs, economic development and sustainable livelihood. A simple but impressive event organised at AHD Office premises, witnessed a significant turnout of dairy farmers, industry stakeholders, and enthusiastic citizens.
Director Animal Husbandry Department J&K Dr. Parvinder Singh Sudan graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
In his inspiring address, Dr. Sudan highlighted the theme for World Milk Day 2025, “Let’s Celebrate the Power of Dairy,” emphasizing milk’s multifaceted contribution to health, agricultural prosperity, and the overall well-being of the region.
“Milk is not just a food item; it is a powerhouse of nutrition, a backbone for countless farming families, and a crucial driver of our rural economy,” stated Dr. Sudan.
Elaborating advanced sector specific interventions introduced in J&K, he said the Dairy sector growth is expected to show a potential rise with the inclusion of Sex Sorted semen to be harvested from High Pedigree bulls which the Department is procuring from the US this financial year.
The celebration included a range of activities aimed at raising awareness about the benefits of milk and the advancements in the dairy sector. Informative sessions were conducted by veterinary experts on modern dairy farming techniques, animal health, and the importance of hygienic milk production.
A highlight of the event was the felicitation of progressive dairy farmers from across the Jammu region. These farmers were recognized for their exemplary contribution to dairy development, their adoption of innovative practices, and their role in boosting milk production and quality in the Union Territory. Their dedication serves as an inspiration for others to embrace dairy farming as a viable and profitable venture.
World Milk Day, an initiative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, is celebrated on June 1 every year to promote the importance of milk as a global food, highlighting its nutritional benefits, and supporting the dairy sector.
Jammu and Kashmir has seen a rise of Milk per capita availability from 56 gm in 2000 to 600 gm in 2024 surpassing the national average and ICMR recommendations. J&K has seen a boom in the dairy sector & under HADP/other dairy related schemes it is expected to grow @7.5 % Per Annum.
