The Inner Voice: Whispers of a soul and the rise of a blooming bud

Lok Adalat, one of the alternative dispute redressal mechanisms, is a forum where disputes and cases pending in the court of law or at pre-litigation stage are settled and compromised amicably. As such, the National Lok Adalats stands as a shining example of speed, simplicity and accessibility in the judicial process. Held at regular intervals across Jammu and Kashmir under the guidance of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), these people’s courts have become instrumental in delivering timely justice and reducing the burden on an already overwhelmed judiciary. The genius of the Lok Adalat system lies in its simplicity. It offers a platform where disputes are resolved amicably, without prolonged litigation, legal technicalities, or hefty expenses. From civil disputes and cheque bounce cases to family conflicts and compoundable criminal matters, Lok Adalats have helped lakhs of citizens find resolution through dialogue and mutual agreement. In the recently held 2nd National Lok Adalat in Jammu and Kashmir, it has been reported that a total of 1.30 lakh cases were settled by 173 benches across the region. For many, especially from rural or economically weaker backgrounds, this is often the only practical way to seek justice. In each session of the National Lok Adalat, thousands of cases, some pending for years, are settled in a single day. This not only unclogs the courts but also brings immediate relief to litigants, who may otherwise have waited years for a verdict. The role of Lok Adalats in promoting legal awareness cannot be overstated. They bring the justice system closer to the people, reinforcing the idea that law is not just for the powerful or the privileged — it is for everyone. For countless citizens, especially those unfamiliar with legal processes, the Lok Adalat offers a first experience of fair and compassionate justice.
