Strengthening bonds

In what could be termed as the timely move, the Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) has launched a Valley-wide parent-teacher meeting (PTM) initiative, which deserves both recognition and support. This renewed focus on parental engagement marks a constructive shift toward holistic child development. For too long, education in the Valley has been viewed primarily through the lens of academic results and institutional performance. While those metrics matter, they cannot capture the full picture of a child’s learning journey. The home and school are two critical pillars in a child’s life and the synergy between them can significantly impact a student’s emotional, intellectual and social growth. Parent-teacher meetings serve as a bridge between these worlds. When parents are engaged in their children’s schooling, not merely as observers, but as partners, the students are more likely to succeed. This initiative, therefore, is not just about conversations between teachers and guardians, but about building a culture of shared responsibility. The initiative also helps instill a sense of community within the education system, breaking the often transactional relationship between schools and families. It sends a clear message that education is not a one-way street dictated solely by syllabi and schedules, but a shared mission to nurture and empower every child. However, the success of this initiative will depend on more than just turnout. Schools must ensure these meetings are meaningful, inclusive and solution-oriented. Language, social background and parental literacy levels should not become barriers. Flexible timings, follow-up mechanisms and feedback loops can help make PTMs more impactful.
