Over a decade after Jammu and Kashmir witnessed the massive floods, the similar situation has once again arisen in the Valley and Jammu parts as the heavy rainfall for the last three days has ended up in the rise in the water bodies, thereby leading to the flood threat across the region. With the situation raised concerns among the people, it is a time when the public must collectively remind themselves of a vital truth: panic helps no one, but preparedness and calm action do. The government, both at the Union and regional levels, is fully mobilized. Disaster response teams are on standby, emergency control rooms are active round the clock, and relief measures are being deployed wherever needed. From civil administration to the armed forces, coordination efforts are being strengthened to tackle any eventuality. The role of the public in such a situation cannot be overstated. Staying calm, following official advisories, avoiding rumour-mongering and extending community support are key to ensuring safety and reducing chaos. Sharing unverified messages or videos only fuels fear and hinders rescue efforts. Let us also take a moment to commend the countless individuals on the ground, emergency workers, health staff, police personnel, volunteers, who are working tirelessly, often in dangerous conditions, to keep people safe. Their dedication must be matched by our patience, cooperation and resilience. The citizens, especially those in vulnerable areas, must keep emergency kits ready, stay updated via reliable sources, and support one another as a community. Floods may test our infrastructure, but how we respond will reflect our character as a people. In these trying times, let us meet nature’s challenge not with panic, but with preparedness; not with fear, but with unity and calm.
