The recent shortlisting of three female Taekwondo athletes for the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) selection trials is not only a sporting achievement but a testament to the sporting culture in Ladakh. Ladakh Taekwondo Association has rightly expressed immense pride over such a development and the region should join in the jubilation. This is not only a story of individuals but of institutions and the bright future of women’s sports in the Union Territory. The three athletes have been shortlisted for trials to select the Indian U-18 team for the ISF Gymnasiade 2026 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This puts Ladakh on the sporting map. For a Union Territory, which has barely become a Union Territory, for its daughters to contend for a place in the Indian contingent is remarkable. It is the result of a collective effort with various stakeholders playing their part. Ladakh Taekwondo Association has done its bit, guided by the President Gulzar Hussain Munshi. However, an important contribution has come in from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Centre in Kargil. It was the professional coaching and training facilities of the SAI that helped polish the athletes. However, the road to Gymnasiade in Brazil is not over yet. The three athletes will have to demonstrate their mettle at the centralised selection trials to be held in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. The confidence of Ladakh Taekwondo Association that greater participation from all categories will see more qualification is justified. This is a proud moment for Ladakh and for India. The success of the young women will go a long way in encouraging many girls and boys to take sports seriously.
