When journalism turns into trolling: Reclaiming fourth pillar of democracy (Part-II)

Srinagar is steadily stepping into a new era of urban mobility, with the commencement of work on the Nawab Bazar–Darish Kadal corridor marking another significant stride toward decongesting the city’s overburdened traffic arteries. For decades, Srinagar’s historic core has struggled under the weight of narrow lanes, growing vehicular numbers and an expanding population. The new corridor, designed to ease pressure on key inner-city routes, represents both timely action and a thoughtful shift toward smarter, sustainable traffic systems. The initiative is part of a broader vision that seeks to transform Srinagar into a more efficient, citizen-friendly and environmentally responsible city. By adopting scientifically planned mobility interventions, the administration aims to strike a balance between preserving the heritage fabric of Old Srinagar and ensuring modern connectivity. The corridor will not only redistribute traffic load but is expected to reduce travel time, improve road safety and bring long-awaited relief to daily commuters. This project also aligns with the city’s evolving approach to urban planning rooted in data-driven decisions, strategic infrastructure upgrades and the integration of smart technologies. Measures such as intelligent traffic management, better road geometry, improved signage and the creation of designated pedestrian zones can amplify the benefits of the ongoing work. Encouraging public transport through better facilities and last-mile connectivity will further support a sustainable shift away from private vehicle dependence. However, success will depend heavily on timely execution, minimal disruption during construction and continuous stakeholder engagement, especially with residents and shopkeepers along the corridor. The administration must ensure smooth coordination, transparent communication and regular progress reviews. Srinagar’s journey toward a smarter traffic ecosystem has begun in earnest. Projects like the Nawab Bazar–Darish Kadal corridor are not merely infrastructural upgrades; they are investments in the city’s quality of life and its future as a modern, sustainable urban centre.
