Decline in Hajj applications deserves attention

The fresh directive about making all toilet facilities for girls functional in all government schools by February 15 is being seen as a timely and appreciable move. In Jammu and Kashmir, the access to safe and clean toilets for girl students is central to dignity, health and educational equity. For adolescent girls, the absence or poor condition of toilets often becomes a silent barrier to regular school attendance. Many girls miss classes during menstruation or drop out altogether due to lack of privacy and hygiene. The situation undermines years of effort aimed at improving female enrolment. Functional toilets are therefore essential to creating an inclusive learning environment. Health considerations add further urgency. Inadequate sanitation exposes students to infections and long-term health issues. For girls, these risks are compounded by social taboos and discomfort in speaking out. Schools must be spaces where students feel safe and respected while sanitation facilities are a basic prerequisite for this assurance. The February 15 deadline set by the Chief Secretary sends a strong signal of administrative seriousness and accountability. Time-bound targets often succeed where routine instructions fail, as they compel departments to move beyond paperwork and address ground realities. At this juncture, the community participation and school management committees can play a vital role in monitoring upkeep, while regular inspections and digital reporting can help maintain standards. Equally important is sensitization of students and staff on hygiene practices and responsible usage. Ensuring functional toilets for girls is a small but powerful step toward gender equality in education. When schools respect the basic needs of girl students, they not only improve attendance and learning outcomes but also affirm a broader commitment to dignity, empowerment and social progress.
