Keep Kashmir connected

The growing success of the “Nasha Mukt JK Abhiyaan” shows that the fight against drug addiction in Jammu and Kashmir can no longer be seen solely as the responsibility of police or government departments. The campaign’s emergence as a people’s movement reflects a wider realization that substance abuse threatens the social and moral fabric of society itself. The participation of more than one crore people in awareness programmes across the Union Territory is a strong indicator that communities are beginning to confront the crisis collectively. Schools, colleges, Panchayats, religious institutions, sports groups and civil society organizations have all contributed to spreading awareness about the dangers of narcotics addiction. Equally important is the administration’s emphasis on rehabilitation and mental health support. Addiction is not simply a law-and-order issue; it is deeply connected to psychological distress, unemployment, social instability and emotional vulnerability. The large number of individuals approaching counselling centres and treatment facilities shows both the scale of the crisis and the increasing acceptance of professional help. The crackdown against narcotics networks has also been extensive. Seizure of drugs, demolition of properties linked to traffickers and intensified surveillance measures have delivered a strong message to organized drug syndicates operating in the region. Such actions are necessary to disrupt supply chains that continue targeting vulnerable youth. However, the challenge remains far from over. Drug addiction cannot be defeated through short-term campaigns alone. The administration must ensure that rehabilitation facilities remain functional, counselling services expand to rural areas and recovering youth are provided opportunities for education, sports and employment. A drug-free society requires continuous vigilance and public participation. The real strength of this campaign lies in the fact that ordinary people are now becoming active stakeholders in protecting future generations from addiction and despair.
