Uri, May 31: In a major boost to Jammu and Kashmir’s power sector, the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NHPC inaugurated the construction activities of the Uri-I Stage-II Hydroelectric Project (240 MW) at Mohura in Uri area of Baramulla district.
The inauguration was marked by the first blast at Adit-3, formally launching the major underground works of the prestigious hydroelectric project. The event signifies an important milestone in the development of the project, which is expected to strengthen the region’s power infrastructure and contribute significantly to clean energy generation.
The Uri-I Stage-II Hydroelectric Project is being developed by NHPC on the Jhelum River as an extension of the existing Uri-I Hydroelectric Project. With an installed capacity of 240 MW, the project will comprise two generating units of 120 MW each.
Once completed, the project is expected to generate approximately 932 million units of clean and renewable energy annually. The project features an underground powerhouse and is designed to enhance energy security while supporting sustainable development in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking on the occasion, NHPC officials highlighted the importance of the project in meeting the growing energy demands of the region and contributing to India’s renewable energy goals. They expressed confidence that the project would be completed within the stipulated timeframe while adhering to environmental and safety standards.
The commencement of underground works marks the beginning of a new phase in the project’s execution and reflects NHPC’s continued commitment to developing world-class hydropower infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir.
Local residents and stakeholders welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that the project would create employment opportunities, boost economic activity, and contribute to the overall development of the Uri region and surrounding areas.
The Uri-I Stage-II project is considered one of the key hydropower initiatives in the region and is expected to play a vital role in strengthening the power generation capacity of Jammu and Kashmir in the years to come.
