Mission YUVA: Investing in aspirations

The handmade carpet is a symbol of Kashmir’s artistic excellence, cultural heritage and the livelihood of thousands of artisan families. Yet this centuries-old craft today faces a serious threat, not from a decline in skill or demand, but from the growing practice of machine-made carpets being sold as handmade products. The concern being raised deserves urgent attention. When machine-made carpets are passed off as handmade, the damage extends far beyond unfair competition. Consumers are deceived, genuine businesses suffer and artisans who spend months crafting intricate carpets lose the value and recognition their work deserves. For Kashmir, where handmade carpets enjoy global acclaim, such misrepresentation strikes at the heart of an industry that has long been a source of employment and cultural pride. Tourists and buyers often visit the Valley seeking authentic handmade products. If they unknowingly purchase machine-made alternatives, confidence in the entire sector is undermined. The result is unsold inventories, declining revenues and growing economic distress among weavers and craftsmen. The solution requires coordinated action. Strict enforcement against false marketing must be ensured across the country. Retailers found misrepresenting products should face penalties. Equally important is the promotion of Geographical Indication (GI) labels, certification mechanisms, and public awareness campaigns. Consumers must be equipped to distinguish genuine handmade carpets from machine-made imitations. Transparency is essential for restoring trust in the marketplace. Governments, industry bodies, exporters, retailers, and artisan groups must work together to create a robust verification and monitoring framework. Technology can also be employed to improve traceability and authentication. Protecting handmade carpets is not merely an economic necessity but a cultural obligation. Preserving the integrity of this craft means preserving a legacy that has carried Kashmir’s name across the world for generations and thus the time has come to defend authenticity and ensure that craftsmanship receives the respect it deserves.
