Keeping Kashmir connected

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message to devotees undertaking the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra carried an important appeal that deserves attention beyond the spiritual significance of the annual pilgrimage. By urging pilgrims to support local livelihoods in Jammu and Kashmir, the Prime Minister highlighted a crucial dimension of the Yatra, i.e. its ability to strengthen the region’s economy and improve the lives of thousands of families who depend on tourism. Every year, the pilgrimage generates employment for a wide range of local stakeholders. Pony owners, palki bearers, transport operators, hoteliers, shopkeepers, artisans, photographers and countless small vendors rely on the Yatra season to sustain their annual income. For many, these few weeks determine their financial stability for the rest of the year. Encouraging pilgrims to use local services and purchase locally made products ensures that the economic benefits of the pilgrimage remain within the communities that work tirelessly to facilitate it. The Prime Minister’s appeal also reinforces the broader idea of responsible tourism. A pilgrimage is not merely a religious journey but an opportunity to contribute to the welfare of the host community. Choosing local accommodation, transport, food outlets and handicrafts helps create jobs, supports small businesses and encourages inclusive economic growth across the Valley. Equally important is the message of partnership. The success of the Amarnath Yatra depends not only on efficient administration and robust security arrangements but also on the hospitality and dedication of local residents. Recognising their contribution strengthens trust and reinforces the bond between pilgrims and the people of Jammu and Kashmir. As lakhs of devotees undertake the sacred journey this year, supporting local livelihoods should become an integral part of the pilgrimage experience. Such a collective effort will ensure that the spiritual rewards of the Yatra are matched by meaningful economic gains for the communities that make this annual event possible.
