Mathematics: The language of order, balance, divine wisdom

The recent spell of heavy rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir has once again highlighted the importance of a resilient healthcare system. Floods, landslides and road blockades not only disrupt daily life but also place enormous pressure on hospitals and emergency services. In such situations, uninterrupted healthcare becomes as critical as rescue and relief operations. The inspection of a government medical institution by the Health Minister reinforces the need for constant vigilance. However, preparedness should not remain limited to emergency visits during adverse weather. Every hospital, primary health centre and community health centre across Jammu and Kashmir must function with a permanent disaster preparedness plan. Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, making it essential for healthcare institutions to maintain adequate stocks of medicines, oxygen, blood and emergency equipment while ensuring reliable power backup, ambulance services and trained personnel. Equally important is proper sanitation, functional drainage and regular maintenance of hospital infrastructure to prevent disruptions during heavy rains. Preparedness also demands close coordination among the Health Department, district administrations, disaster management authorities, police, power and water supply departments. Timely restoration of roads, electricity and drinking water is vital for uninterrupted medical care, particularly in remote and vulnerable areas. Beyond hospitals, public awareness, disease surveillance and community participation are equally important. Floods often increase the risk of water-borne diseases, making preventive healthcare measures and public hygiene campaigns essential. Climate change has made extreme weather a recurring reality rather than an occasional event. Jammu and Kashmir must therefore strengthen its healthcare system through sustained investment in resilient infrastructure, trained manpower, emergency planning and technology-driven response mechanisms. A healthcare system prepared for every emergency not only saves lives during disasters but also strengthens public confidence and ensures that essential medical services remain available when they are needed the most.
