The inscription of Kalhana’s 12th-century chronicle Rajatarangini in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Asia-Pacific Regional Register is a proud moment for Jammu and Kashmir. The recognition places Kashmir’s historical and intellectual legacy on the international stage and acknowledges the significance of a work that has documented the region’s past for nearly nine centuries. Written in Sanskrit, Rajatarangini, meaning ‘River of Kings’, is much more than a chronicle of rulers and dynasties. It offers a valuable account of Kashmir’s political developments, society, traditions and cultural evolution. Kalhana’s effort to examine earlier accounts and historical sources makes the work particularly significant in the history of Indian historiography. The inclusion of the manuscript, preserved at Srinagar’s Oriental Research Library, alongside the Mahabharata and Arthashastra, also highlights the importance of India’s documentary heritage. The recognition has rightly been welcomed by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. However, beyond celebrations, it should serve as a reminder of the responsibility to protect such invaluable treasures. Kashmir has a remarkable literary and intellectual tradition, but preserving its legacy requires sustained institutional attention. Historical manuscripts and rare documents need proper conservation, digitisation and systematic documentation to protect them from deterioration and ensure wider accessibility. The Oriental Research Library deserves particular attention and support so that its priceless collection can be preserved and made accessible to scholars, researchers and students. Educational institutions should also encourage greater engagement with Kashmir’s historical works through research, translations and academic discussions. UNESCO’s recognition is not merely an international honour; it is an opportunity to reconnect younger generations with their roots. Kashmir’s history should not remain confined to library shelves. It must be studied, understood and passed on. Preserving Rajatarangini means preserving an essential part of Kashmir’s identity.
