Sand extraction: Violation must not continue

The illegal happenings are going unabated in some areas of Jammu and Kashmir. However, one fails to understand why the concerned authorities have failed to act against these illegal actions and put an end to these actions. Illegal sand extraction is one among the illegal happenings going on at several spots along the river Jhelum in Srinagar and in other districts while the authorities are acting as mute spectators. These happenings have been taking place at a time when the administration is claiming high and tall about the transparency in the governance system. There are people who question the illegal sand extraction at multiple places in Srinagar and elsewhere from the prominent water body. Such illegal work is taking place in the broad daylight. Such an illegal sand extraction after the dredging process by the government is once again generating the risk of floods to the river bank dwellers as the banks with every passing day are getting weaker with such actions. There is a need for the administration to tighten its noose on such violations and make sure that such mafias who are working with the support of the officials are brought to book. The government must not allow such happenings at all and ensure that those involved are taken to the task so that the embankments are not weakened and the dredging process going on will prove fruitful for the people.
