Srinagar, Sep 15: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Vijay Kumar Wednesday said that four militants are still active in Srinagar and police are trying to either arrest them or to eliminate them in the encounters.
Speaking on the side-lines of a sports event—Taekwondo Championship at Indoor Sports Hall, Polo-ground Srinagar, the IGP Kashmir, said “There are still four militants active in Srinagar who are being tracked down. They will either be arrested or killed in encounters.”
He said that police are probing the Khanyar attack. “It is totally unjustified that policemen are being attacked from behind. We will arrest or kill the attackers involved in the act,” the IGP said, adding that after the killing of Lashkar-e-Toiba/TRF commander Abbas Sheikh and his aide Saqib in Srinagar encounter, attacks including hit-and run and target killing of policemen have come down. Asked about the rise in the grenade attacks in Srinagar, the IGP said that he was out of station and that he will review the situation in a day or two.
Replying to a query that whether police would organize more sports activities in the months ahead, the IGP said that sports activities and tournaments are a must to keep the youth away from militants and drugs. “We will organize more such events as COVID has not started settling down,” he said, adding that sports activities help develop the personality of youth. “This is a different aspect but yes indeed, sports activities will help keep youth busy and prevent them from choosing the wrong path.”
