Srinagar, Sep 20: The workers of National Conference (NC) on Monday were seen fighting among each other allegedly over the appointment of district president during party elections in Shopian.
Insiders in the party said that there was a scuffle between workers of two NC leaders Sheikh Rafi a former MLA and Shabir Ahmad Kullay.
They said that workers of Kullay weren’t happy with Sheikh Rafi who forwarded the name of Showkat Hussain Ganie, NC leader and former MLC for the post of district president which was accepted by NC leaders who had reached from Srinagar to Shopian for internal elections to elect district and block president.
Shabir Ahmad Kullay said that there was a scuffle between workers of Watchi and Shopian constituency after he was not allowed to take part in the elections.
“NC leader from Watchi constituency Showkat Hussain Ganie was given post of president only because of his name. There were directions from high command to give him this post,” Kullay alleged.
“I tried to take part in district president elections and submit a form but I wasn’t allowed to do so, ” he said, adding that as per party manifesto 300 members constitute one delegate.
“However, from the tribal community 200 members constitute one delegate but it wasn’t followed, which became the main cause of the scuffle,” Kullay said.
Kullay said that he will take up this issue with party high command tomorrow.
Sheikh Rafi former MLA Shopian said that he forwarded the name of Showkat Hussain Ganie with the support of 90 delegates including his 30 delegates which was accepted by all.
“Even Shabir Kullay was present at that time and didn’t say anything after the election team of the party high command asked if there is any other person who wants to submit a form for the post of president,” Rafi said. “Nobody came forward and Showkat was elected as district president.”
“We had over 130 delegates, and he (Kullay) was having just 60 delegates, how could he be elected as president,” Rafi said.
“He was aware that he can’t win the election so he tried to create disturbance,” Rafi alleges.
