Shopian, Apr 13: Surge in stray dogs in Keller sub division of Shopian has become a cause of grave concern for inhabitants of the area.
Residents of Chowan Keller said that the problem has assumed a serious dimension with concerned authorities turning a deaf ear to the public outcry.
They said that every time packs of dogs can be seen on roads causing inconvenience to the general public.
Increasing numbers of these stray dogs are posing a grave threat to the life of people and the movement of people, especially children, elders and women has become difficult during morning and evening hours, said a local woman.
“My minor daughter was bitten by stray dogs a day ago and in the last one or two months over a dozen people were injured in our area by dogs,” she said.
People alleged that the mysterious rise in dog population was due to their transportation from urban areas during night hours and have appealed to the concerned authorities to tackle the menace at an earliest for the convenience of the people.
It has become difficult during morning and evening hours to move at ease, said another local, adding, “due to the large number of dogs, people especially elderly and children feel unsafe in venturing out of their lawn,” he said.
“We brought the issue into the notice of higher ups several times to no avail,” locals said, while once again requesting authorities to address the problem.
